Hate Bag Ceremony - 2010

Ceremonies and ritual burning

The burning of effigies, possessions and bodies has existed
within cultures around the world for thousands of years.

Shown here is a 'hate bag'; essentially the contents are
from a shortlived and explosive relationship, returned by
the ex-girlfriend to her ex-boyfriend.

Considering that the returning of gifts was an act of spite
and deliberate hurt, the bag served no purpose but to
perpetuate ill-feelings.

Thus exorcism, through a ritual burning, seemed apt.

This series is a document to the arrangement and ignition
of the items of the hate bag, and serves to record the
event, as would any other document of a ritual or ceremony.
